Nova Scotia Volunteer Firefighters bursary

Purpose

This bursary has been established to support the children, legal dependents and grandchildren of volunteer firefighters across Nova Scotia in pursuing post-secondary education and/or skilled trades.

Created to honor the volunteer firefighters who have dedicated themselves to serving their communities and, for some, given their lives in that service. By investing in the education of their families, the bursary honors their contributions and helps ensure their service continues to make a lasting difference.

This bursary will be applied towards educational expenses such as tuition, books, or mandatory fees.

eligibility criteria

  • The applicant's parent, legal guardian, or grandparent must be an active volunteer firefighter within a volunteer fire department in the province of Nova Scotia.

  • The applicant must be accepted to or enrolled in a recognized continuing education program, college, university, trade school, apprenticeship, or other accredited educational institution.

  • Applicants must provide all required documentation by the deadline.

  • One application per eligible student

  • The bursary is intended to support the volunteer firefighting community. Family members of RelyOn employees and shareholders are excluded.

Application requirements

  1. Application Form

  2. A personal statement of no more than 500 words explaining why this bursary would make a difference in their education. The applicant should state how this bursary will support their educational goals and reflect on how being part of a volunteer firefighter family has shaped their values, experiences and career aspirations.

  3. The applicant must provide a letter from the Chief confirming the firefighter’s active service within the department.

  4. Proof of acceptance or current enrollment

The personal statement must be the applicant’s own work. AI-generated personal statements will result in immediate rejection of the application.

Submission

Applicants must submit all required documents by the published deadline as one PDF document in the following order:

  1. Application Form

  2. Personal Statement

  3. Letter from the Fire Chief confirming the firefighter’s active volunteer service with the department

  4. Proof of acceptance or current enrollment at an eligible educational institution.

Evaluation

  • Successful applicants will be notified once the review process has been completed.

    Awards are based on:

  • The applicant's educational objectives.

  • The anticipated benefit of the bursary.

  • The reflection on the commitment and service of their volunteer firefighter family.

Award

  • Five bursaries of $1,000 will be awarded annually

  • Funds will be paid directly to the educational institution.
